Wrong or Write?
So I got a email about a call for submissions for a short story contest. The place is Cliffhanger Books and they’re looking for a paranormal romance story for an upcoming anthology. I’m not too big on romances, but I like the paranormal part and after thinking about it I decided it sounded like fun and I had what I thought was a workable story idea so I decided I’d give it a try and I think I’m just about done. The problem is they’re looking for 6,500 – 8,000 words and I’m at about 4,000. Why is that a problem? The reason that’s a problem is because I obsess about this type of stuff and suddenly my 4,000 words don’t seem good enough.
Define “good”.
I try to define “good” and I can’t and whenever I try to define “good” I always come out on the side of “not good”. In truth, “good” is relative, right? So if the story doesn’t work for this contest it’ll work for something else in the future. Still, I obsess.
There’s another six weeks until the submission deadline so I’ll put my story away and let it simmer for awhile and maybe when I open it up again there’ll be another 2,500 words just screaming to get put on paper.
Or maybe not. Either way it’ll be good enough, right?
Best of luck with that. I like your positive attitude and actually getting things done, ie written.
