Who’s Your Buddy?
Song Lyric Sunday and the prompt is find a song that performed with orchestras and/or choirs.
By definition there’s a difference between “orchestra” and “band“, but that definition is slim and in certain genres, especially jazz (see: orchestral jazz), and especially now, interchangeable.
So I have Buddy Rich along with his 15-piece Big Band from Buddy’s live 1967 album, Big Swing Face. The song is Cole Porter’s Love for Sale. If you’re not familiar with the song and would like to listen to one of the earliest popular versions first, here’s Billie Holiday (and her orchestra!) from 1952.
Arranged by Pete Meyers and featuring Chuck Findley (Who? If you’ve listened to any popular jazz or rock over the last 50 years, you’ve heard Chuck sitting in on trumpet with everyone from George Harrison, to The Rolling Stones, to Sarah Vaughn, to Miles Davis and dozens more household music names in between) with the trumpet solo. The song was recorded at the Chez Club in Hollywood, California on February 22, 1967.
If you want to listen to something that’s maybe not so traditional but performed by a traditional orchestra then there’s this piece you probably won’t (which is unfortunate) hear on the radio anytime soon.
Great selections, Michael.

These are great selections! Have you seen the video of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa with their drum dueling? Fantastic!

I hadn’t seen that before but I just did after reading your comments! If we’re talking about the same one (with Sammy Davis, Jr.?) it was really great!
