Bad luck?

April 18, 2023

Today is Tuesday and it’s Fandango’s 93rd Story Starter. Fandango provides the start, and the rest is up to us.

(This is kind of a story and kind of a rhyme. I don’t know what that’s called.)

I crouched behind the car, trying not to make a sound…
And I saw the broken tailpipe laying on the ground.

I said to myself, “Now ain’t that a shame.”
And wondered about the possibility of an insurance claim.

No, I wouldn’t do that – not because I didn’t want to be a liar –
but because I discovered that I also had a flat tire.

A tailpipe, maybe, but both claims? A no go.
I guess I’m just a hapless and unlucky schmo.

Someone once told me, “When you’re stuck, son, stay stuck.”
And with that thought I called AAA* and asked them to send a tow truck.

The driver arrived, got the car ready to tow.
He asked me where he should take and I said, “I don’t know.”

“I’ll take it to Benny’s then, it’s just up the road.”
I said, “Fine,” and I guess right then my frustration it showed.

Cuz the driver he wiped sweat from the back of his neck
and said, “Could be worse there, pal, least ‘ya weren’t in a wreck.”

I nodded, and smiled and stopped in mid-curse,
The driver was right: things could always be worse.

* If you’re not familiar with “AAA” it’s the acronym for the American Automobile Association and they provide roadside assistance (among other things) to members. It’s generally referred to, and pronounced, as “Triple A”.)
