Clap your hands and dance

January 22, 2023

It’s Sunday and time for song lyrics. Jim’s prompt for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday is Country music.

I don’t care too much for what Country music is today, the stuff on the radio is unlistenable in my opinion, but putting that aside, I’m a fan. Especially country rock and country folk, outlaw and progressive.

I think people mock Country music because they think the songs are all woe is me, crying in my beer songs, and while that’s not altogether untrue (if anyone wants a sad – like brutally sad – country folk song here’s Marie by Townes Van Zandt), but I think there are an equal, if not more, upbeat, happy Country songs. One of them is 1972’s Hill Country Rain by Jerry Jeff Walker.

Sometimes I just wake up hummin’, feelin’ like the world is right.
Want to jump right up and walk outside and take in the morning light.
Feel the music running through me makes me want to dance.
Clap my hands and dance

Sometimes it just takes my lady to smile and make my day complete.
And that’s a feeling that make me tap my feet, clap and tap my feet.
Feelin’ like you know you’re lucky with every single thing.
Clap your hands and dance.

People they tell me, “Take it easy, you’re living too fast.
Slow down now Jerry, take it easy let some of it pass.”
But I don’t know no other way, got to live it day to day.
If I die before my time, when I leave, I’m leaving nothing behind.
Oh, no, when I leave I’m leaving nothing behind.

‘Cause I got a feeling, something that I can’t explain,
it’s like running naked in that high hill country rain

Do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do.

Oh, I ain’t worried about tomorrow, I’ll get by best I can.
Lovin’ is my will to live, it makes me laugh, want to sing and dance.
Oh and clap my hands, clap my hands, yeah!

Do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do.
Do do do do do do do do.

I got a feeling, something that I can’t explain,
it’s like running naked in that high hill country rain

I got a feeling, woo, something that I can’t explain,
it’s like dancing naked, in that high hill country rain.

A very nice choice …not being abtrue country fan I am on a learning curve here… My choices will probably make you cringe 😬💜

Excellent song choice from another of the outlaw country genre. Of course most non-country fans know him best for writing “Mr. Bojangles” – another great song. Thanks for featuring him today.

Nice choice Michael and it is nice that Jerry Jeff Walker can be remembered for more than just Mr. Bojangles.

Haven’t listened to good, old school Jerry Jeff for decades. And he’s so good!

Great choice here! I love anything with a fiddle playing. ☺️
