Love is the law
This week Jim’s Song Lyric Sunday asks us to Name that Tune and tempts us to share a song with a recognizable introduction. With its double time bass line, drum and trumpet introduction, I think this song does just that which is why I’ve chosen Love is the Law by The Suburbs.
The Suburbs were a local Minneapolis punk/new wave/alt/rock band. Formed in the late 70’s their rowdy and legendary live shows eventually made them regular headliners at the venerable First Avenue nightclub and put them on a level, at least locally, and with respect to “the Minneapolis Sound”, with The Replacements and Husker Du.
The band’s third album was released in 1984, and while still dance focused, it was a little harder than their first two albums. You may have heard Love is the Law on the season 5, episode 22 of Roseanne. The song still gets some radio play locally and when that happens it brings back fun and happy memories for some and is a good day for all.
Love really is the law.
Here are the lyrics.
Well I was walking through the middle of town
and I said to myself, “Yeah, what’s going on?”
People breaking the law just to make ends meet,
but people breaking their hearts just to stay off the street.
And written on the wall for everyone to see
was “Love is the law” right there on the street.
It said:
Love is the, love is the,
love is the, love is the,
love is the, love is the law.
Oh!
Love, love, love.
Love.
Love is the law
Oh!
Love, love, love.
Love.
Love is the law.
Woo!
Well girls, yeah you’re looking alright.
And boys, you don’t look so bad.
You gotta give it, if you want to get it.
You gotta give it, if you want to get it.
You gotta give it, if you want to get it.
You gotta give it, if you want to get it.
Love is the, love is the…
Love is the, love is the…
Love is the, love is the law.
Oh!
Love, love, love.
Love.
Love is the law.
Oh, oh!
Love, love, love.
Love.
Love is the law
Woo!

I’ve not heard of the Suburbs before, or watched Roseanne either, but this is one heckuva catchy tune. The intro reminded me of something the Baja Marimba Band would play.

That song is like something they would have done. But it’s different than pretty much all of their other songs.

I’d never heard of the band or this song before, but I really like it. To a Brit’s ears, they sound a bit like Lloyd Cole and the Commotions cranked up a bit 😊
