Maybe I’m a cynic

June 19, 2022

Maybe I’m a cynic, but I watch PSAs and read letters asking for donations for whatever charitable cause it is they’re asking for, and you always hear, “Proceeds help benefit the blah, blah, blah…” and I wonder how are proceeds defined? Are that non-profits proceeds defined as everything received is given to whatever blah, blah, blah is, or are that non-profits proceeds defined as what’s left over after everyone running the organization gets paid and the overhead is covered? I suppose I could also wonder how “help benefit” is defined? Does it mean that people who are hungry (which, BTW, there are 42 million people in the US alone who are food insecure) actually get food and money to buy food and have edcuational resources available to them, or do they just get a box of macaroni & cheese and a digital download cookbook?

A lot of charities do provide this information, but sometimes it’s not easy to find. I think it should be included right up front in every donation request. A person shouldn’t have to go look for the information.

There might not be a maybe. I probably am a cynic.

Interesting you should mention this today. I like a good thrift shop every now and then. Cheap books are my cheap thrill. Yesterday at Waterfront Rescue Mission, couple before me had a bill that came to something like $14.43. Cashier asked them if they wanted to ’round it up for the mission.’ My bill came to about $4.96. So, I get asked if I want to ’round it up or give another dollar’ again, for the mission. The Mission sends out pre-stamped donation books in the mail, which I gladly send back with a donation check–several times a year. So, round it up? Yes. Keep the change from a $5 dollar bill. An extra dollar? Makes me looks like a schmuck if I bristle a little, doesn’t it? I’m stepping lightly.

I’m over feeling guilty. One, I don’t have much extra money. Two, I discovered that most of the animals “charities” I donated to in the past were scammy, with a few exceptions. Three, I gave quite a bit to prochoice orgs who did NOTHING to preserve our rights, nor have the Dems I’ve supported. Four, I’m sick of beggars ~ probably the ones most in need are too ashamed to stand on the corner with their hand out. And five, no, I refuse to be pressured by prompts to “round up.” Eff all this!!!

    Sorry rant lol

haha! Go, Paula! You have given THE POWER to say no and not feel guilty. Every freakin’ store I go to asks you to round up. I buy cat food and the cashier asks me to round up to feed the animals. But I’m thinking, ‘You work in a pet store. How about you guys just donate a boatload of food to ‘feed the animals.’ It’s out of control.

I, too, am a cynic, which is why, now that I’m retired and living on a fixed income from investments in the stock market, which is tanking, my charitable contributions of late have been close to zilch.
