Give it a spin

April 13, 2022

Usually every week I share my 99-word story that was prompted by Charli Mills at Carrot Ranch Literary Community. Charli has branched out and opened the Cowsino this week and if you’re interested in checking it out, or even playing along (Yay!) you can find it here.

The idea behind the Cowsino is to add a game that’s not only fun, but “edumacational”. We write a six-sentence story that follows the Story Spine format and we share it at Carrot Ranch:

We get our prompt for our Story Spine story from the pictures that show up on the good old Cowsino Night slot machine which this week gave us these three pictures.

You never know, it could be fun if you played along. If you feel inclined, just click here.

Here’s my story spine. It’s not at all original, but it was fun thinking of the source while thinking of the six sentences—

Cleaning gutters is a messy and time-consuming job; it had taken much of the morning, but Westley had finally finished.

He put the ladder back in the shed, turned and surveilled the ranch, mentally tallying up the rest of the day’s chores: tend to the chickens and goats and the three Berkshire pigs that ate better than he did, and see to the vegetable garden that had been neglected for too many days.

He had just bent to grab the feed pail when he saw her.

Her blonde hair, a soft shade that matched the mane of her Palomino mare, fluttered behind her as she rode up the trail to the house.

His heart began to pound and he found it difficult to take a deep breath.

“’Morning, farm boy, will you see to my horse?” she said as her feet kissed the ground.

“As you wish,” he whispered.
