With the band
From Charli Mills at the Carrot Ranch is this week’s challenge.
November 11, 2021, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story using the phrase “carry on.” It can be an expression of perseverance or behaving in a particular way. It can even be luggage you take when traveling. Go where the prompt leads!
With the band
It had been Shawn’s dream since the first day he picked up a guitar to play in a band. So it wasn’t that he was unhappy with where he was at now, a steady gig and getting paid for making music, but the dream was more the Shawn Williams Band rather than guitar in classic rock cover band.
The house lights dimmed.
“Ladies and gentleman, give it up for “Not in Kansas Anymore”!”
The stage lights rose to mild applause. Tony’s eyes dimmed as he stepped to the microphone and started singing the lower harmony:
“Carry on, my wayward—”

Just in case there’s someone reading who hasn’t heard the song and would like to listen to it.
Crosby Stills Nash & Young….carry on!

At least he’s making music.
I feel like I recently heard of a Kansas concert. Can’t imagine being Kansas and still playing Kansas.

I just saw that they’re coming here to Minnesota next year for their 40th anniversary tour. I don’t even know if there’s anyone from 40 years ago left in the band?

Oh, that’d be weird; Kansas but no original members. Like The Same Axe Twice, where the ax has been preserved for generations, though as it gets passed on different owners have changed out the handle, another the head…
Oof. You suppose they have a bunch of new material and maybe I just missed hearing it?

I thought of this song, too, Michael B. I am surprised I didn’t think of the CSN&Y song as they are one of my favorite groups of all time.
Liked your piece, well done!

Thanks Nancy! Yeah, I’m also surprised that I didn’t think of the CSN&Y song. I love the band and especially that album.

I come here for the story, Michael, and stay for the music. Carry on.

It is indeed sometimes very difficult for anyone to carry their dreams to fruition.
Thanks for the music. Something from ‘my generation’. Though I’m not good with artists or music. I actually have some vinyl records of CSN & Y. Don’t think I have Kansas though.
Whenever I see ‘Not in Kansas any more’ I think of Frank L Baum and Oz.

Me too! That’s why I chose that as the band name.

Baum wrote so many wonderful stories of Oz. 🙂
