July Saturday night
Kevin lit a bowl, inhaled deep and passed the pipe to me; I hit it and passed it back. Deep Red had just started, or it could have been Race with the Devil, I don’t know.
It was Saturday night, it was July, and we were at the drive-in, and it didn’t matter what the three movies were playing because we’d smoke some weed and drink some beer and then maybe walk around the lot looking for cars filled with girls who might be fancy free and more interested in talking to guys than watching a movie.
I opened the door and slid out of the front seat, walked around back and opened the trunk and pulled out the cooler, and Tim, black hair slicked back from spending 30 minutes in the airless trunk – the downside being the smallest of us – jumped out and ducked into the back seat where Kev had the pipe and lighter waiting for him.
I handed Kev a beer and put mine up on the dash so I could hold Tim’s until he stopped coughing.
At some point we’d turn the drive-in speaker down and turn the 8-track up and we’d shout over Grand Funk Railroad and Aerosmith a bunch of BS about the week that was and the week ahead; we’d smoke and drink and laugh at the movies, and we might fall asleep at at some point, but it didn’t matter because it was a Saturday night, it was July and we were at the drive-in.

Drive-ins were going out of style by the time i was old enough to drive, and that is a little sad.

Brought back so many memories, especially the smuggling of bodies. 🙂

They must have been a nuisance to anyone there who wanted to watch the movies, but there likely weren’t many anyway.
