Play (sort of) ball!

July 24, 2020

The Twins opener is tonight in Chicago. I’d like to be more excited about the 2020 season, but it’s just not there for me. Too many changes to the game and not enough meaning to the games. I’ll watch and follow, and it’ll be a distraction from the madness of reality, but it’s not the same.

The oddest thing about this goofy season is that teams will be playing MLB-approved crowd noise sound effects during the game. Apparently the piped in applause, cheers and boos echoing through the empty stadiums will help the players feel the real game experience. I guess it’s not the same for them either.

And to all the players, coaches and managers, black, brown and white, nationalities too many to mention, who have taken a knee during the national anthem of spring training 2.0 games, and during last night’s season opener in Washington, thank you. You are all, every one of you, heroes and patriots and together you’re sending a message that will work to make America great again. I stand and applaud you all as you kneel and remind of what we need to be reminded of every day.

Finally, to the Tampa Bay Rays – I don’t like Blake Snell, but I love that as an organization you had the courage to send this tweet this morning: “Today is Opening Day, which means it’s a great day to arrest the killers of Breonna Taylor”. I’m hoping the Twins do something equally courageous next Tuesday.

So heartened to see them take a knee, with the black ribbon stretched along before them. And smart to do this before the anthem was played, for those who are easily confused as to what taking the knee really means.
