Little Rabbit

May 7, 2019

Tuesday morning. 3:30 a.m. I’m driving to the gym. The road is deserted and dark, lit only by dim streetlights at the end of every block. Suddenly I see a rabbit charge out from the shoulder of the road on my left and dash toward me. I hit the brakes and because he’s running right I swerve left to avoid him and what does the dumb rabbit do? He sees this giant monster bearing down on him and he gets scared and instead of speeding up and continuing to run to the right, to safety, he hits the brakes and makes an impulsive about face and goes back to the left where he came from. The impact was unavoidable. A tiny thud and that was it and hopefully there’s not a litter of rabbits somewhere about a mile away from where I live who are orphaned. Little critters get smooshed by cars all the time but that doesn’t make it less of a sort of bid deal for me, considering I was the one doing the smooshing. I suppose on the positive side there’s a small buffet for whatever raccoon or crow or insect finds the little guy first so I guess they’re all happy.

“My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend stopped running today.” – Rabbit proverb.

Aww 😦 Whenever I see an animal on the side of the road I always feel so bad. It would be nice if animals had a sense about staying off the roads and far away from cars.

I agree. Squirrels seem to love being out in the middle of the street and crows are there too picking up food. I thought maybe if cities could install invisible fencing then maybe that would work but I suppose that would cost too much money.
