Boon! (Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge)

March 11, 2018

The Carrot Ranch Literary Community, hosted by Charli Mills, is HERE.

March 8, 2018, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that features a balloon. It can be a party balloon or a hot air balloon. How does it add to your story? Go where the prompt leads.

“Boon! Boon!”

Head thrown back, arms raised to the ceiling, fingers extended and wiggling like worms on the hook, Jess reached for the orange balloon bouncing across the dining room ceiling.

I’m not sure how memories are categorized; how they’re filed away in the brain or what hand determines which memories stay and which ones fade, but sitting here now, as old as I am, I still remember Jess’ face on that birthday morning and those eyes, big as the chocolate chip pancakes she just finished eating when I pulled the balloon down and held it out to her.

I can just picture Jess’s young and happy face. You made her world that day with that “boon”. If only it was always that easy to make someone’s day, including our own.

I often think the same thing about memories, but some are etched in my mind like this tender memory a father holds of his daughter. And I always enjoy the musical extensions, Michael!
