FlashNano Day 12: The Fortune

November 12, 2017

Day 12: Write a story involving a superstition

The Fortune (389 words)

The fortune read, “Energy is within you. Money is coming your way”. Not bad, but I would have rather have had Beth’s fortune which told her that, “People around you will be more cooperative than usual” but c’est la vie.

I signed the check, put my card back in my billfold. “You ever wonder why some people call this thing a billfold and other people call it a wallet?” I said.

“Not very often. You spend a lot of time on that, do you?”

“Nah, not really. It just popped in my mind, I don’t know. You ready?”

“Yeah, let’s go find that money coming your way.”

I smiled. “Now you’re talking!”

We walked out of the restaurant, took a left on the sidewalk and walked past the cigar store, the liquor store, the nail salon and the dollar store on the way to the car.

“Strip malls are interesting, you know?”

“Or something.”

“No, really. They have a unique charm.”

“I’ll have to take your word on that, Rick.”

“See? I knew I should have had your fortune because someone is already being more cooperative than usual.”

Beth smiled and took my arm and leaned into me. “I think I like the idea of you having money come your way. I always wanted to be married to a rich man. I’d like to start by doing some remodeling, you onboard with that?”

“Yeah, but we’re hiring the work out, I’m done with painting when I’m rich. You know, when I’m rich I might have… Hey, look, by that car,” I said, nodding to a late model silver Chevy, “There’s a penny.”

Beth let go of my arm. “Well, go ahead,” she said. “Pick it up. ‘Find a penny, pick it up, blah, blah, blah.’

I stepped over to the curb and bent down and picked up the penny, “And not to mention my fortune already coming true,” I said looking back at Beth.

“Uh oh.”

“Hmm?”

“I got a little problem here, Beth.”

“Your back?”

“Mm hmm. My back. Will you help me straighten up?”

Beth sighed. “My rich man, what am I going to do with you?”

“Getting me home to a heating pad and a bottle of Advil might not be a bad idea.”

“You better not forget me when you come into that fortune, Rick.”
