Summer Lovin’: The Daily Post Photo Challenge

July 29, 2014

The prompt: This week, share a photo that says summer lovin’ to you.

= = = =

The truth is, I’m not a big fan of summer. I like baseball and I enjoy not driving in snow, but I burn too easily in the sun and I sweat too uncomfortably. And while I like the sound, feel and smell of water, I don’t like the look of the slimy stuff that grows in lakes and rivers and I have no interest in swimming with fish, turtles, frogs and heaven knows what else. What else? I’ve seen the Creature from the Black Lagoon and I know what can grow and live in lakes and rivers. Like the creature and like the brain-eating bacteria that’s breeding everywhere and just waiting to turn your brains to watery Cream of Wheat. And then there’s sand getting stuck in unmentionable areas of my body. That, and going to sleep when the sun is still shining.

Summer? No thanks, you can have it.

But even though I’m always longing for standard time, cooler temperatures, low humidity and brain-eating bacteria-free waters pretty much every day after the calendar clicks past the ides of June, there are a few things I do love about summer.

One of the things I love about summer is lemonade stands. No one should ever drive past a lemonade stand without stopping and buying a glass. It’s a cheap way to make a kid happy and it gives us as adults a minute to see life through the eyes of a kid. I’m not sure there’s a better bargain for your dollar.

Lemonade Stand

In case you’re wondering, no, I don’t drink the lemonade I buy at lemonade stands. I’ll pretend to drink if I have to by bringing the cup close to my mouth but that’s it and that’s only if I feel it’s necessary. Otherwise, I’ll carry the cup with me back to my car and then dump it out a block away. I see some people buy their lemonade and drink it right three in front of the kid, but people also skydive and bungee jump and rock climb. Not me.

Another thing I love about summer is that peaches are in season.

Peaches

Canned peaches are OK but they’re not great and while I love pretty much all fruit, there’s not a lot that beats a ripe and juicy peach. I don’t care what variety, they’re all good, especially Saturn peaches. And trust me on this: if you pretend the pit in the middle is a toy then it makes the peach even better. Look at it like a healthy box of Cracker Jack.

I’m with you on the summer thing. Already counting the days until the Autumn is here in the UK.

Great minds and all that! Thanks for the comment, Hugh.

Ah, I love summer. It’s currently winter here in Melbourne, Australia, and I would trade it for warmer summery weather in a heartbeat! That’s just me. I don’t get why you dump your cup of lemonade away when no one’s looking. I thought lemonade made by roadside stalls in the States are safe to drink.

Great shots for this week’s challenge!

It’s kind of a “thing” I guess you could call it, for lack of a better word. The lemonade is probably safe but since I don’t know where it was made or how it was made or what it was made with or how many house pets drank out of the bowl as it was being made (you get the idea), I’d rather not drink it. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! I just finished watching the Farscape TV show where just about everyone had Australian accents.

You’re right. Lemonade stands don’t have official food handling licenses like street food vendors. Every chance the drinks can be made out of a dog’s water bowl or something like that.

I hoped Farscape was great summer watching for you. You must find Australian accents strange 😀

They’re not so strange. They’re like British accents only different. More… accentier!

I really liked your conclusion: the peach pit as the prize at the center of the fruit. “Look at it like a healthy box of Cracker Jack.” In future, I will try to amend my disappointment at having no more fruit.
