The Bearer of Bad News
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Cara cara navel orange season is now over. I was at Byerly’s in Minnetonka yesterday and they had none and it was the same story at the St. Louis Park Byerly’s today. None. Nothing. Gone. Done. Season over.
If you’ve never had a Cara cara then be sure to remember them when they start showing up again this fall. They’re darker and redder inside than a regular navel orange, they’re sweeter and, at least to my taste buds, they’re less acidy.
Speaking of Byerly’s, I don’t know what happened to that Minnetonka store but it’s really gone downhill since they remodled. The place is less a real grocery store now and more of an upscale corner market. Remember Kenny’s Markets or 7-Elevens or other small markets you’d go to for munchies or cigarettes, but not for regular food? That’s sort of what Byerly’s in Minnetonka now only prettier and fancier. The deli is small and the bakery is small and the food choices have changed and frequently the shelves are empty because, “the vendor hasn’t been in yet” (or so I’m told) and I’m almost tempted to say that the best thing about the store is the post office and the Red Box kiosk. Maybe they sort of gave up on being a real grocery store after Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods moved into the neighborhood?
Enough of that. Maybe I’ll try some other stores this week looking for some elusive Cara caras hiding out underneath some bananas or something. Or maybe the produce guy has a hidden stash in the back and he’ll turn me on to a few. Just a few, you know, to help a guy out? That’s all I need. Really. Just a few. You know what I mean?
Oh Cara cara… First Survivor ends and then Grey’s Anatomy ends and now this.

Perhaps there is a backroom with the sweet delights hidden. Perhaps they are the new exchange innstead of the euro.

What are the steps to edit a comment? My keyboard is having fits (turns out it is a known problem with this model) creating typos. You know it cannot be me! Seriously. How do I edit the above comment or heck just delete the dang thing?

I get an edit button on my page under your comment but I don’t know if you get that or not? I didn’t notice the typo though until you mentioned it. Anyway, I like your idea of a backroom somewhere with those oranges being kept and I need one bad! (Let me know if you want me to delete your comment)
