The Word of the Day is–

The word of the day is “Wow”.

As in: “Wow, can you believe it?”

I wondered what type of word “Wow” was. You know, like is it a noun, or is it a verb, or maybe an adjective, or some other part of speech that I don’t remember, so I looked it up and discovered that “Wow!” is what’s called an “interjection”.

So I, uh (“uh” is another example of an interjection), wondered what an interjection was and I’m back to wondering if it’s a noun, or a pronoun, or a verb or some other part of speech, and all I know is that when I think about parts of speech for too long I start to think about pizza burgers because thinking about the parts of speech makes me think about school, and thinking about school makes me think about pizza burgers because pizza burgers were regularly served for lunch and lunch was my favorite time of the school day and pizza burgers were my favorite lunch. I also liked band, but given a choice between lunch and band, I’d choose lunch.

That’s enough talk of parts of speech. Too much of that kind of talk and a person could fall into a comma.

Back to the word of the day.

“Wow,” I interjected with glee. “Today is something else, all right.”

I’m naming “Wow” as the word of the day for December 14, 2011 because right now, here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, it’s 36 degrees and raining.

I think I hear what you’re thinking and I agree, it is maybe a bit of a letdown after I sort of built the whole word of the day and the “Wow” thing up a little bit with all that talk of lunch and pizza burgers.

Sorry about that.

I guess I’ve got some nerve, huh? Wow!

Anyway, if you can find it in your heart to forgive me for my little bit of over-enthusiasm and your eventual letdown I would be thankful and would promise to be your friend forever.

It is a little odd that it would be 36 degrees and raining in Minnesota on December 14 though, you have to agree with me on that. And as uncommon as this is, it really does, pretty much, almost, in a way, deserves a “Wow!”, don’t you think?

“Wow, he just won’t leave it alone, will he?”

Oops.

I’m happy with the rain. I don’t like doing anything in the snow. I don’t like driving on it, or walking on it, or trying to move it, or playing on it – or in it – in any way. The only thing I like about the snow is to take pictures of it on trees and bushes and other structures, and since I’ve done that a few times already, I don’t need to do it again.

I think the weather forecasters miss the snow, and I know a lot of Minnesotans miss the snow, but I don’t.

I’m not unhappy when it rains.

“Wow, first you don’t like snow and now you like the rain? What the fu—”

Hey, now, there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t judge you for liking the snow or for watching Jersey Shore and Dancing with the Stars so leave me and the rain alone.

“I suppose…”

Thank you.

I do like the rain. It’s calming and cleansing and it allows me to stay inside without feeling guilty about it. But December rain, even though I like it, is a little weird because it’s really not normal and you know it’s going to inevitably freeze.

Oh well.

“Wow! That’s a mighty cavalier attitude to take toward the weather.”

I’m ignoring you now.

“You can’t just—”

Yes, I can. (Wow! Some people, huh?)

The song above by Garbage was featured in an episode of the old TV show, Homicide: Life on the Street. If you’re not familiar with the show it’s a police procedural set in Baltimore, Maryland, based on David Simon’s Edgar Award winning book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. The show ran for seven seasons and might be one of the best dramas to ever air on network television. Writing, acting, direction, soundtrack, guest stars, the show is truly without equal.
