Gamemaster Russell Hantz finally voted out of Survivor

March 10, 2011

Today is a sad day in Survivor history. One of the greatest minds to ever play the game, and the single most polarizing and entertaining player to ever play the game, was finally sent packing last night.

It was quite a run for Russell Hantz and I had a blast watching him bulldoze his way through 2+ seasons of the show leaving clueless players scratching their heads in his wake. Russell revolutionized how the game is played with the hidden immunity idol and he should/will go down in Survivor history as being as influential in terms of game play as Richard Hatch. Never before has a Survivor player – without the Survivor editing geniuses behind the scenes! – generated such strong emotional responses from fans. Love him or hate him, Russell was a player and Russell was entertaining.

When the reality of leaving the game sunk in Russell began to cry and he said he wouldn’t play the game again. I’m not sure that it wasn’t his own emotion speaking last night when he said that, but as much as I like Russell, I hope he doesn’t play Survivor again. He’s done all he can on Survivor and there’s no need for him to tarnish his reputation by returning. I won’t be surprised to see Russell show up on another reality show though and if he does, I’ll watch him.

The king is dead. Long live the king!

I personally cheered last week when he got voted out but wasn’t too optimistic that Matt would beat him at Redemption Island but after doing just that yesterday I was REALLY cheering when Russell was out for good. I never liked him from day 1. He was a bully who manipulated with intimidation and outright threats, not to mention he tore his own tribe apart from within the first two times he played with his troll-like acts of sabotage. He was billed as the greatest player who never won and he even tried to BUY the title of sole Survivor at the first finale when he didn’t win it. Too bad those who played the second time didn’t have the chance to have seen him in action on TV before their game played out or they would have sent him packing in the same way this tribe did. He was dirty player that many others besides myself had no respect for. About all I can say for him was that he was good at finding idols without clues but in the end his lack of a good social game is what doomed him to ultimately fail both times he played even though he made it to the final TC. No one likes a bully, I did NOT find him entertaining in the LEAST and I am breathing a sigh of relief now that he’s gone. King? He ain’t no king in my realm.

Dirty or aggressive or cunning, it’s all in how one looks at the players. Survivor has had a lot of dirty/aggressive/cunning players over the years: Richard Hatch, Sandra Diaz, Jerri Manthey, Brian Heidik, NaOnka, Boston Rob, Tyson Apostol, Parvati Shallow, Jonny Fairplay and others I’m forgetting. Russell was no different than any of them and without cocky, arrogant and delusional players, Survivor would be a lot less fun to watch I think.
