Super Bowl = Super Bore?

February 5, 2011

I’m not a football fan so the Super Bowl doesn’t hold any interest for me beyond the halftime show. Springsteen, Prince, The Who, The Rolling Stones, even Tom Petty, that was some good stuff, but the Black Eyed Peas? I’ve heard the name but not their music so this year even the halftime show doesn’t appeal to me.

What about the commercials? I know a lot of people like watching the game just for the commercials, but to me a television commercial is synonymous with “fast forward” or “change the channel”. I have no doubt that if I’m (un)lucky I’ll see the Super Bowl commercials in the next few weeks.

I’m not going to go on a rant about football other than to say that I find it odd how we turn Super Bowl Sunday into a sort of national holiday and I wouldn’t be opposed to moving it to Monday and changing the name to Super Bowl Monday so at least I get the day off from work. I also wouldn’t be opposed to changing the name of the game itself to avoid confusion with the real game of football – what we call soccer – as it’s played in other parts of the world. Since the player’s foot is rarely used in American football the name doesn’t make a whole lot of sense so maybe it would be better if we called it something like Throwball, or Runball or Dance In The Endzone After Scoring Pointsball.

If you’re a football fan, enjoy the Super Sunday and the game!

As a baseball fan I totally agree with you! And yes, such a big deal about the commercials. Commercial = potty break. Commercial = go get another beer. Commercial = make more popcorn. When do you do all the important things you need to do if you have to watch all the commercials?

I will be watching the “Puppy Bowl” on Animal Planet.

It’ll probably be the Puppy Bowl for me, too. Or nothing at all. Only 10 days now to baseball – are you all ready to cheer on the Twins?!
