The prompt (thanks to Tracy at Gather):
You have just heard a stranger say, “And then, down there at the very bottom? Those two buzzard wings?”
In 100 or fewer words tell us what that stranger was talking about. The 12 words of the question (or the title of your story) are not part of your 100 words.
— Use one/more/all of the following words in your story —
potato / flying / cafe / artist / armadillo
My response:
Final Call
He picked up on the third ring.
Whiskey-voiced. “Who is it?”
“It’s me. You got an update?”
“And then?”
“And then you get paid, asshole.”
“Tough guy,” his words were thick, dangerous. “I dug a hole, and then, down there at the very bottom? Those two buzzard wings?”
“Yes?”
“Signed, sealed and delivered.”
“Dead?”
“Followed ‘em from the cafe, squashed ‘em like a potato. Planted ‘em like you wanted.”
“Show some respect. One of those “buzzards” was an artist.”
“My job’s not to show respect to some armadillo painter.”
“You bastard…”
“Now don’t go flying off the handle on me! Now’s not the time to decide you still love your wife, pal.”
Your response: ???
I came home to find Sheila hysterically flying around the kitchen. I can’t find any thing to prepare for dinner that we’d be willing to eat. I’ve come up with one potato and down there at the very bottom of the freezer? Those two buzzard wings are the only thing in the house. If we don’t go down to Becky’s Café, you’re going to spend a very hungry evening.
