Remembering Dr. King

January 17, 2011

During Martin Luther King, Jr. Day today we’ve been shown a lot of video footage of the slain civil rights leader and treated to many of his inspirational quotes, but there are a couple of King’s quotes I don’t hear a lot and because I like them so much I wanted to share them with anyone who reads this.

“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

That’s a really tough concept for me to grasp. I not only want to see the whole staircase, I want to see what’s beyond the staircase and what’s beyond the stuff that’s beyond the staircase.

“If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well.”

I think if we can believe those words and live those words we’ve found the key to happiness.
