Has an evil genius invented a weather machine?

December 21, 2010

In the old Underdog cartoon, Underdog’s arch-nemesis, Simon Bar Sinister,  once invented a weather machine. By controlling earth’s weather, Simon Bar Sinister reasoned, he could control the earth. Together with his henchman, S.B. Sinister kidnaps the love of Underdog’s life, Sweet Polly Purebred, and takes off for the moon where he can control earth’s weather. Luckily for us, the call went out for Underdog who thwarted Simon Bar Sinister’s every attempt to control the earth’s weather and the world was saved.

Someone needs to put out the call for Underdog because I’m starting to think something’s wrong with the world’s weather. Severe weather in Europe, heavy rain and snow out in California and snowstorm after snowstorm here in Minnesota. (For those keeping score, we’ve had snow on 14 of the first 20 days of December).

I had this thought about Simon Bar Sinister this morning as I was driving to work on snow/slush covered roads while wiping away the freezing drizzle.

From my windshield, not my eyes.

Freezing drizzle in December? Someone just tell Simon Bar Sinister that he’s the master of the world already and let’s get the weather back to normal. Unless someone, if they know the words, can put out the call for Underdog . . .

As usual, since we have access to your Minnesota channels here in Canada, I have been well aware of every snow “event” you have had lately and I can truly commisurate (SP?) having been there, done that when it comes to experiencing snow and lots of it. We’ve had a significant snow load so far this year as well, but ours is NOTHING like what you’ve had south of the border. I was disappointed last night however to have the snow clouds obscure a significant celestial event – the Winter Solstice Total Lunar Eclipse – an event that hasn’t happened since the 1600’s and won’t happen again till the 2090’s, in other words, not again in my lifetime 😦 Yes, we will have other lunar eclipses but not on the same day as Winter Solstice which makes it all the more powerful and awe inspiring. Mother Nature giveth and, for SOME of us, She taketh away, sigh. The last time we had another significant celestial event – the Total Solar Eclipe that was visible here in January ’79, wouldn’t you know that that was the 1 year I spent living away from home down in California. It seems that I seem to miss a lot of the good sky gazing. Well, at least there’s the annual Persiad Meteor Shower in August and if I am not mistaken, another couple of lunar eclipses next year IF Mother Nature deems us worthy to part the cloud curtain before the main events!

One of the answers is H.A.A.R.P. Another is the strange behavior of the sun.
