Welcome back, Standard Time!

October 31, 2009

I’m not really sure what it is that makes me like the eventual return to Standard Time, but I look forward to it every year, usually starting about two weeks after the switch to Daylight Saving Time. Maybe it’s because I see no reason to ‘save’ any daylight or maybe it’s just because I don’t like change. It’s possible I think the thought of saving energy during the evening hours is silly when you have to turn around and spend money on energy during the morning hours. It’d be easy to chalk it all up, like most everything else, to my inherent laziness, but even I can’t really figure out a way to make that link. I think the reason I like the return to Standard Time so much is because it brings me back to a time of life I liked; a time when there was a certain structure and calm to life. A time when things weren’t as rushed or hectic. A meatloaf and mashed potatoes time. Maybe it’s also because I think music sounds better in a darkened room, movies were meant to be watched in the dark, or I enjoy reading with just a reading light. Or maybe it’s because candles don’t burn as interestingly in the light as they do in the dark. Difficult to say, but I suppose it might also have a little to do with not feeling pressured to be out doing something simply because, “it’s still light out”. Whatever the reason, it’s been seven and a half months and now it’s back. So, take a nice, relaxing, deep autumn breath and say goodbye to never-ending daylight and just fall back and for the next 134 days and enjoy!
